HBIA Australian Hairdressing & Beauty Championships 2019

  1. FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION – OPEN

PRE DONE COMPETITION 
Judging time: 9:00am

Strictly an 8”x10” (20 cm x 25.5cm) photographic print must be lodged with the HBIA no later than a week prior to the competition (Monday 13th May 2019)
• The photograph is to be of ONE FEMALE MODEL O
NLY and reflect CURRENT TREND fashion magazine work of a high standard
• Digital copy of all photographic entries are to be supplied to HBIA i.e. on USB or via dropbox etc.
• No borders are to be displayed on photographs
• Photographs are to be entered on original and appropriate materials (i.e. – no prints to be mounted on backing boards etc)
• To have your photograph returned please send a self-addressed envelope enclosed with a stamp for your photograph to be returned
• Photographs will be judged by the HBIA expert panel of judges one week prior to the Championships
• All winners are announced at the HBIA Australian Hairdressing Championships on 19th May 2019

  1. FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION – APPRENTICES & STUDENTS

  1. FIRST TIME COMPETITOR PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION (APPRENTICE & STUDENTS)

PRE DONE COMPETITION
Judging time: 9:00am

  • This is an introduction into the world of hairdressing photo shoots combining hair, makeup and styling.
    • Strictly an 8”x10” (20 cm x 25.5cm) photographic print must be lodged with the HBIA no later than a week prior to the competition (Monday 13th May 2019)
    • The photograph is to be of ONE FEMALE MODEL ONLY and reflect CURRENT TREND fashion magazine work of a high standard.
    • Digital copy of all photographic entries are to be supplied to HBIA i.e. on USB or via dropbox etc.
    • Competitors in this section must not have entered a photographic competition before.
    • Armature photographs accepted (i.e. you do not have to use a professional photographer)
    • To have your photograph returned please send a self-addressed envelope enclosed with a stamp for your photograph to be returned
    • Photographs will be judged by the HBIA expert panel of judges one week prior to the Championship event

  • Strictly an 8”x10” (20 cm x 25.5cm) photographic print must be lodged with the HBIA no later than a week prior to the competition (Monday 13th May 2019)
    • The photograph is to be of ONE FEMALE MODEL ONLY and reflect a CURRENT TREND magazine cover.
    • Digital copy of all photographic entries are to be supplied to HBIA i.e. on USB or via dropbox etc.
    • Your inspiration may come from magazine covers of Instyle, Marie Claire, Fashion Trend etc.
    • No borders are to be displayed on photographs
    • Photographs are to be entered on original and appropriate materials (i.e. – no prints to be mounted on backing boards etc)

  1. COLLABORATIVE COLLECTION PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION – OPEN

PRE DONE COMPETITION
Judging time: 9:00am

  • Strictly an 8”x10” (20 cm x 25.5cm) Colour and/or Black & White photographic prints must be lodged with the HBIA no later than a week prior to the competition (Monday 13thMay 2019)
    • Must submit four photographs and reflect an overall collection and/or theme inspired by today’s current fashion trends
    • Digital copy of all photographic entries are to be supplied to HBIA i.e. on USB or via dropbox etc.
    • No borders are to be displayed on photographs
    • Photographs are to be entered on original and appropriate materials (i.e. – no prints to be mounted on backing boards etc)
    • To have your photographs returned please send a self-addressed envelope enclosed with a stamp for your photograph to be returned

  1. STYLING IRON AWARD- JUNIOR CATEGORY

PRACTICAL STYLING COMPETITION
Scrutineering Time: 8:40am
Starting time: 9:00am
Judging Time: 9:45am

  • On One model, competitors must complete a style using a styling iron of any sort
    • Pre-prepared hairstyles will result in disqualification
    • Examples of styling irons include; straighter, tongs, crimper, curling iron etc.
    • Examples of current styles you may wish to create are; waves, crimps, curls, straightening etc.
    • Models to be taken for scrutineering, with the hair raw which includes
    hair hanging free, dried, with no pre-sectioning, braids or ponytails.
    • Blow driers are not permitted
    • Judges will award points for styles that accentuate movement and control of the hair.
    • Time allowed is 45 minutes.
    • Competitors exceeding this time will automatically be disqualified.
  1. FEMALE CUTTING – Senior Category
    (This section will have points allocated to the overall Senior of The Year Award 2019)

PRACTICAL CUTTING COMPETITION

Scrutineering Time: 8:50am
Starting time: 9:10am
Judging Time: 9:55am

  • On One female model, to create a design cut by removing an average of 3cm overall from the hair and to clearly create a change of style.
  • Finished look is to reflect current fashion trends.
  • All textures of hair will be considered.
  • Styling method optional and pre-prepared hairstyles or pre-cut to style will result in disqualification.

Points will be allocated for your model’s overall look.
• Time allowed for cut and finish is 45 minutes.
• Colour must be used to enhance the final result.
• All cutting tools allowed

 

9: THE PERFECT PONYTAIL -JUNIOR PRACTICAL

PRACTICAL COMPETITION
Scrutineering Time: 9:55am
Starting time: 10:15am
Judging Time: 11:00am

  • On One model, competitors must complete a fashion ponytail look of today
    • Pre-prepared hairstyles will result in disqualification
    • Hair pieces and Wefts may be utilised up to 50% of own hair must be visible
    • The completed look must be complemented by clothing and makeup and should reflect fashion of today.
    • Models to be taken for scrutineering, with the hair raw which includes hair hanging free, dried, with no pre-sectioning, braids or ponytails.
    • Time allowed is 45 minutes.
    • Competitors exceeding this time will automatically be disqualified

 

10: MENS/WOMENS BARBERING / FADE – SENIOR CATEGORY

(This section will have points allocated to the overall Senior of The Year Award 2019)

PRACTICAL COMPETITION

Scrutineering Time: 10:10am
Starting time: 10:30am
Judging Time: 11:15am

  • On male or female model, competitor must clearly create a change of style, with scalp exposure
  • Scissor over comb limits can be pushed
  • Blending and fading very important
  • Examples are: David Beckmann,  Tom Brady , Wayne Runey , Christiano Ronaldo
    • Scissor over comb techniques will be judged
    • All cutting and styling tools allowed
    • Finished look is to reflect current barbering trends
  • Pre-prepared hairstyles or pre-cut to style will result in disqualification.
    • Time allowed for cut and finish is 45 minutes.
  1. : MENS/WOMENS BARBERING / FADE Junior Category

(This section will have points allocated to the overall Junior of The Year Award 2019)

PRACTICAL COMPETITION
Scrutineering Time: 10:10am
Starting time: 10:30am
Judging Time: 11:15am

  • On One male model, competitor must clearly create a change of style, with scalp exposure
  • Scissor over comb limits can be pushed
  • Blending and fading very important
  • Examples are: David Beckmann,  Tom Brady , Wayne Runey , Christiano Ronaldo

    • All cutting and styling tools allowed

  1. THE NOW COLOUR’ – JUNIOR CATEGORY

(This section will have points allocated to the overall Junior Colourist of The Year Award 2019)

PRE DONE COMPETITION

Scrutineering: 11.10am
Judging Time: 11:30am

  • Open for all colour competition competitors.
    • Multiple Entries will be accepted
    • All colouring to complement the hairstyle incorporating today’s current fashion creative colour trends.
    • All work to be pre-done.
    • Visual judging only, 70% of points goes towards colour and 30% towards the overall effect. A declaration that the model’s hair has been coloured by the competitor will be required prior to taking the competition floor.
    • The finished styling must reflect today’s current fashion trend.
  1. FESTIVAL BRAIDS -SENIOR CATEGORY

PRE DONE COMPETITION

Scrutineering : 11.40am
Judging Time: 12:00pm

  • On one model, competitor must create a braided hairstyle to reflect current fashion trends and festival theme.
    • All Braiding styles allowed
    • Styling method is optional and braiding techniques can include but not limited to; fishtail braid, sewing, reverse braid, French braid etc.
    • All hairstyling work to be pre – done.
    • Hairpieces and extensions may be used, be as creative as you like!!
    • No Wigs to be used.
    • Models will be required for the award presentations.
    • Points will be allocated for your model’s overall look.
    • The finished styling must reflect the festival theme think music, think Coachella.
    • Declaration must be signed on the entry form pledging that all works are carried out by you, the competitor.
  1. ‘INSTA BLONDE’ – JUNIOR CATEGORY

(This section will have points allocated to the overall Junior Colourist of The Year Award 2019)

PRE DONE COMPETITION

Scrutineering:    12.10pm

Judging                   12.30pm

  • Multiple Entries will be accepted
  • Beautiful bombshell blonde
  • Level 9 or lighter
    50% of colour must be blonde( 50% of the colour must be a level 9 or lighter )
  • All colour work to be pre done
  • Utilise todays free hand colouring techniques to complete the look
  • Baliage, umbre, dip dye its up to you.
  • Models will be required for the award presentations
  • Winners work may be published in our industry media publications

 

  1. MEN’S CLASSIC CUT – SENIOR CATEGORY

  • Examples are: Elivis , Steve McQueen , Richard Gere , Cary Grant , John Lennon , Liam Hemsworth , James Dean
    • All cutting and styling tools allowed

    • Time allowed for cut and finish is 45 minutes.

  1. UNICORN INSPIRED COLOUR – OPEN

  • Open for all colour competition competitors.
    • Multiple Entries will be accepted
    • All colouring to complement the hairstyle incorporating today’s current fashion creative colour trends and inspired by unicorn colour.
    • All work to be pre-done.
    • Visual judging only, 70% of points goes towards colour and 30% towards the overall effect. A declaration that the model’s hair has been coloured by the competitor will be required prior to taking the competition floor.
    • The finished styling must reflect today’s current fashion trend. Think bold, think pastels, must be magical Hair extensions, wefts can be utilised in completed look up to 50%.
  1. MENTOR AND APPRENTICE –HAIR UP

(This section will have points allocated to the overall Junior of The Year Award 2019)

PRACTICAL COMPETITION
Scrutineering Time: 12:45pm
Starting time: 1:05pm
Judging Time: 1:45pm

  • On One female model apprentice is to be mentored to create a hair up style that allows the opportunity to showcase their hairdressing skills.
    • The finished result should reflect 2019 salon work that is created when a client requests a modern hair up style.
    • Mentors must not touch the models hair however can verbally assist the Apprentice/Student with their hair up style
    • Mentoring focuses on developing employees’ skills therefore judges will be assessing the verbal communication between the mentor and apprentice as well as the skill level achieved from this communication
    • Models must be brought to the hall:
    1. Set in rollers and dried (hair must not be combed or brushed after drying until the competition begins)
    2. Hair hanging free, dried or wet, not pre-sectioned, braided or in a ponytail.
    • Time allocation is 40 minutes – competitors exceeding this time will automatically be disqualified
    • Hairpieces may be used, but must not cover more than ONE-THIRD of the finished hairstyle.
    • TWO-THIRDS of model’s natural hair must be visible upon completion.
    • Padding may be used however must not be visible upon completion.
    • Judges will require model to both sit and stand during the judging.
    • MODELS WILL BE REQUIRED TO PARADE PRIOR TO THE AWARDS PRESENTATION.

  • THIS IS A PRE DONE COMPETITION
    • On One female model, competitor must create a ‘Bob’ cut to reflect current fashion trends.
    • All Bob styles allowed
    • Styling method is optional and Bob techniques can include but not limited to; asymmetrical, undercuts, fringes, layered, graduated etc.
    • Points will be allocated for your model’s overall look.
    • Colour must be used to enhance the final result.
    • All cutting tools allowed.
    • Declaration must be signed on the entry form pledging that all works are carried out by you, the competitor
    • MAY THE BEST BOB WIN!!!!

 

  1. MEN’S TREND CUT – SENIOR CATEGORY

PRACTICAL COMPETITION
Scrutineering Time: 1:30pm
Starting time: 1:50pm
Judging Time: 2:35pm

  • On One male model, competitor must clearly create a change of style
  • Work must be forward thinking and edgy
  • Forecast the next thing in fashion as far as technique
  • Anything goes.
  • Think catwalk forward thinking movies like Ghost In The Shell
  • All cutting and styling tools allowed
    • Finished look is to reflect edgy trends.
    • Pre-prepared hairstyles or pre-cut to style will result in disqualification.
    • Time allowed for cut and finish is 45 minutes.
  1. MEN’S TREND CUT – JUNIOR CATEGORY

PRACTICAL COMPETITION

Starting time: 1:50pm
Judging Time: 2:35pm

  • On One male model, competitor must clearly create a change of style
  • Work must be forward thinking and edgy
  • Forecast the next thing in fashion as far as technique
  • Anything goes.
  • Think catwalk forward thinking movies like Ghost In The Shell
  • All cutting and styling tools allowed
    • Finished look is to reflect edgy trends.
    • Pre-prepared hairstyles or pre-cut to style will result in disqualification.

24.”INSTA BLONDE” – SENIOR CATEGORY

(This section will have points allocated to the overall Senior of The Year Award 2019)

Judging Time : 3:00pm

  • Multiple Entries will be accepted
  • Beautiful clean bombshell blonde
  • Level 9 or lighter
    50% of colour must be blonde       ( 50% of the colour must be a level 9 or lighter )
  • All colour work to be pre done
  • Utilise todays free hand colouring techniques to complete the look
  • Baliage, umbre, dip dye its up to you.
  • Models will be required for the award presentations
  • Winners work may be published in our industry media publications

 

  1. BEAUTIFUL BRIDES– OPEN CATEGORY

PRACTICAL COMPETITION
Scrutineering Time: 2:45pm
Starting time: 3:05pm
Judging Time: 3:55pm

  • On One female model competitors must showcase their hairdressing skills and create a modern bride
    • This is a 2019 Bridal competition requiring current hair trends and must reflect the ‘look’ of a bride in 2019.
    • Hairpieces may be used, but must not cover more than ONE-THIRD of the finished hairstyle. TWO-THIRDS of model’s natural hair must be visible on completion.
    • Padding may be used however must not be visible on completion.
    • Models must be brought to the hall:
    3. Set in rollers and dried (hair must not be combed or brushed after drying until the competition begins)
    4. Hair hanging free, dried or wet, not pre-sectioned, braided or in a ponytail.
    • Time allocation is 40 minutes – competitors exceeding this time will automatically be disqualified
    • JUDGING: Emphasis is predominantly on hair however models gown, make up and your personal interpretation of a bride in 2019 will also be considered in the final judging.
    • Credits of gown designers will be announced during the parade of brides and should be supplied with entry forms 1 week prior to the Competitions
    • Where the style of gown prevents the model from using an ordinary chair, the onus is on the competitor to provide alternative arrangements
    • Judges will require model to both sit and stand during the judging.
    • MODELS WILL BE REQUIRED TO PARADE PRIOR TO THE AWARDS PRESENTATION.
  1. FEMALE CUTTING – Junior

(This section will have points allocated to the overall Junior of The Year Award 2019)

PRACTICAL CUTTING COMPETITION
Scrutineering Time: 2:55pm
Starting time: 3:15pm
Judging Time: 4:00pm

  • This is an introduction into the world of competitions and live cutting on stage
    • On One female model, to create a design cut by removing an average of 3cm overall from the hair and to clearly create a change of style.

All textures of hair will be considered.
• Finished look is to reflect current fashion trends.
• Styling method optional and pre-prepared hairstyles or pre-cut to style will result in disqualification.
• Points will be allocated for your model’s overall look.
• Time allowed for cut and finish is 45 minutes.
• Colour must be used to enhance the final result.
• All cutting tools allowed

 

  1. All That Glitters Styling- OPEN

Pre Done Competition

Scrutineering     4.20pm

Judging                   4.50pm

 

  • Put together an inspirational total look utilising glitter and crystals. All that glitters and sparkles.
  • On a female model present an inspirational total look utilising glitter and crystals.
  • There is no limitations on what may be presented.
  • Multiple Entries will be accepted
  • Points will be allocated for the total look and suitability and also intricacy of the work
  • Model will be judged in the completed form this is a pre done event.
  • Completed looks will be paraded.
  1. SESSION STYLIST RUNWAY AWARD

PRE DONE COMPETITION
Judging: Catwalk presentation on stage at 5:15pm

  • Up to 5 models can be paraded on the catwalk (must have no less than 2 models)
    • This is a team building category that allows an entire salon to get involved
    • This is a designer collection presentation – no dancing allowed
    • Keep in mind the meaning of Session Styling – A hairdressing session stylist creates and cuts hair styles for national and international fashion parades, advertising campaigns, magazine editorial shoots etc.
    • Competitors must create a fashion look and put together a 1 minute catwalk and designer presentation to a song (timing will be judged)
    • Song name and artist to be given to HBIA two weeks prior to the event
    • Music, hair, clothes and make-up is to reflect the collection.
